Federal Forestry Act 1996

With the Austrian Federal Forestry Act of 1996 (“Bundesforstegesetz 1996") the enterprise “Österreichische Bundesforste“ (Austrian Federal Forests) was outsourced and the stock corporation “Österreichische Bundesforste AG” (abbr. ÖBf AG) was established.

Tasks

ÖBf AG has the following tasks:

  1. Continued operation of the enterprise “Österreichische Bundesforste” according to commercial business principles;
  2. Implementation of property transactions and
  3. Administration of the properties for the Federal Government.

The corporation has to achieve optimum economic success in the production and use of the resource of wood, of forest by-products and, if applicable, their processing.

There is strong common interest in the fulfilment of the tasks assigned to the corporation.

Objectives

The following objectives shall, inter alia, be considered when fulfilling the above-mentioned tasks:

  • Sustainable management of the forest soil and safeguarding of its effects;
  • Preservation of drinking and industrial water resources;
  • Protection of the public interest in areas of particularly high ecological value or in ecologically sensitive areas and in natural monuments;
  • Participation in the design and maintenance of national park areas;
  • Paying attention to the ecological balance in game management; and
  • Ensurance of forest rights of use.

Content of the Forestry Act

In addition, the Act contains rules and regulations concerning the way of dealing with areas (for example no sale of strategically important water resources), hunting and fishing leases, the corporation’s right to use and derive income or benefit from the properties managed for the Federal Government (right of usufruct) as well as provisions concerning the staff.
