The tasks of forestry range from the production of the raw material and energy source wood, the protection of the forest habitat, protection against natural hazards, the maintenance of the cultural and recreational landscape, the preservation of biological diversity through to tourism and social areas. The aim is to provide people in rural areas with extensive forestry.

Education
Knowledge is the best way of managing the challenges of the future. The Ministry coordinates, supports and promotes education in its areas of responsibility. The secondary agriculture and forestry schools as well as the University College for Agrarian and Environmental Pedagogy are centres of excellence for healthy and vivid regions. -
Research
The Ministry with its Research strategy and its agencies engaged in Research is an important element of the Austrian research landscape. The ministry conducts its own research and contributes to national as well as international projects and programs. -
