Austrian forests and the Sustainable Development Goals

In 2018, the members of the Austrian Forest Dialogue worked together on giving an overview on the contribution of the Austrian forest and wood sector to the Sustainable Development Goals. The facts and figures show clearly – the sector contributes to reaching all 17 Goals.

In September 2015, the international community agreed on the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development“. By doing so, the 193 Member States of the United Nations undertook to work towards the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on a national, regional and international level by 2030. The Agenda 2030 stipulates a review of the implementation progress based on specific indicators.

SDG 15 decidedly claims the sustainable management of forests. The concept has a longstanding tradition in Austria, is predefined in the Austrian Forest Act and safeguarded by appropriate governance instruments.

The document illustrates how the Austrian forest and wood sector contributes to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals. The present overview has been prepared in cooperation with the participants of the Austrian Forest Dialogue and the contact group for international forest policy of the Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism (BMNT).
