Wastewater Disposal
In 2020, 96% of the population were connected to municipal sewage treatment plants.
The indicated values refer to municipal sewage treatment plants >50 EW60 (population equivalent).
Since the 1970s, there has been a steady increase in the rate of connection. A 100% connection is also not realistic in the future due to the settlement character of Austria (numerous scattered settlements).
The wastewater disposal of the remaining population for example from scattered settlements takes place via cesspits and domestic sewage treatment plants.
The length of the Austrian sewer system is estimated to amount to about 96,000 km.
