Agenda 2030 with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was adopted at the United Nations Sustainable Development Impact Summit held in New York in September 2015.

It entered into force on 1 January 2016 and consists of a political declaration and the catalogue of 17 goals and 169 targets for sustainable development for the period from 2016 to 2030. It is now to be implemented by all UN Member States - therefore also by Austria – at international, national and regional levels (for details, see the link below).

With SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation - a special Sustainable Development Goal for water has been defined. In eight targets, Goal SDG 6 is defined more precisely with respect to drinking water supply (6.1), access to sanitation (6.2), improvement of water quality e.g. by reducing pollution (6.3), increase in water-use efficiency (6.4), IWRM (Integrated Water Resources Management) and transboundary cooperation (6.5), protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems (6.6), international development cooperation (6.a) and integration of local communities (6.b).

Many other SDGs, too, have relations to water, e.g. SDG 11 on sustainable cities and human settlements concerning flood control or SDG 15 on e.g. the protection of water ecosystems.
