Totschnig honours Biodiversity Ambassadors 2024
Farmers who are committed to biodiversity on their farms were honoured as ambassadors for biodiversity. With their innovative approaches and perspectives, they are paving the way for a future-oriented, competitive and broadly-based agriculture that addresses important issues such as biodiversity conservation.
At a ceremony on 15 April, Minister Norbert Totschnig gave awards to 5 biodiversity ambassadors for 2024 within the framework of the "Farming for Nature" project. The event therefore focussed on farmers who are particularly concerned about promoting biodiversity on their farms. The ambassadors were nominated and selected by a panel of experts from the fields of agriculture and the environment. In short, interviews, the newly selected ambassadors gave the more than 50 attendees and the viewers at home, who watched via livestream (in German only), a few insights into their personal life stories and talked about their motivation for their actions.
The idea behind the "Farming for nature" project, which is being implemented by Suske Consulting, is to highlight the diverse biodiversity services provided by agriculture and communicate them to the outside world by means of the ambassadors. In this way, it shows how agricultural production and biodiversity can go hand in hand and mutually benefit from each other in the long term.
The "Farming for Nature" initiative has been in place since September 2021 and builds on experience from Ireland. “Farming for Nature" is also being successfully implemented in Northern Ireland, Lithuania and Croatia.
