The Provin­cial Head­quar­ters of the Aus­trian Ser­vice for Tor­rent and Avalanche Con­trol are re­spon­si­ble for the re­gional co­or­di­na­tion and mon­i­tor­ing of all ser­vices pro­vided by the Re­gional Head­quar­ters within their scopes of re­spon­si­bil­ity.

The Re­gional Head­quar­ters of the Aus­trian Ser­vice for Tor­rent and Avalanche Con­trol pro­vide area-wide and pre­ven­tive pro­tec­tion against alpine nat­ural haz­ards across Aus­tria.

The ser­vices they offer are based on risk po­ten­tials and on the needs of peo­ple in their liv­ing en­vi­ron­ment.

The Re­gional Head­quar­ters record and analyse im­mi­nent risks in catchment areas and hazard zones (tor­rents, avalanches, ero­sion) within their local fields of competence. They offer all key tasks of die.​wildbach in a person-ori­ented and com­pe­tent man­ner:
   
Presently, there are 21 Re­gional Head­quar­ters (“Ge­bi­ets­bauleitun­gen”) in Aus­tria. They are the part­ners for mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties, au­thor­i­ties on dis­trict level, and cit­i­zens af­fected by nat­ural haz­ards.

Provision of qual­i­fied in­for­ma­tion outside of­fi­cial pro­ce­dures.

Ex­pert ac­tiv­i­ties
Prepa­ra­tion of ex­pert opin­ions and state­ments in of­fi­cial pro­ce­dures.

Haz­ard zone plan­ning
ac­cord­ing to sec­tions 8 and 11 of the 1975 For­est Act
Draw­ing up of haz­ard zone plans as a basis for the measures of torrent and avalanche control, of land-use planning, as well as of the con­struc­tion and se­cu­rity sectors.

De­vel­op­ment of pro­tec­tive sys­tems (measures) based on the as­sess­ment of haz­ard processes.

Im­ple­men­ta­tion of mea­sures

The Aus­trian Ser­vice for Tor­rent and Avalanche Con­trol comprises 4 Staff Units, the Central Service Digital Infrastructure and the Cen­tral Pay­roll Ac­count­ing Unit. All Staff Units re­port di­rectly to the Fed­eral Min­istry of Agri­cul­ture, Forestry, Regions and Water Management.
